I just watched the video of Sandeep and Felicia talking with Mahalo Daily (yeah, I'm behind the times, I know). In the interview Felicia rattled off a few games she has played over the years, and I was thrilled to hear King's Quest mentioned. It's not often anymore that I encounter people who were into King's Quest, and even more rare are the people who remember the game before the first one received the retronym KQ: Quest for the Crown. (Random note: The KQ series was the source of one of my favorite random gaming moments. In KQII, if you tried to kill the monk the game said, “Anyone who would kill a man of the cloth doesn't deserve to play this game. Therefore, we shall end it.” and then you died.)

Ok, enough reminiscing. I'll go back to impatiently waiting for Ep. 9 now.

Been a long time but Sierra games were big at my house. King's Quest, Police Quest, Space Quest, Goldrush, Leisure Suit Larry, etc. If it was Sierra, we got it. I used to buy whatever the latest game was, give it to my daughter on a Friday night, hoping she'd get a couple of weeks of play out of it. By Sunday night, she was finished.

When we first got King's Quest 1, we played on a Panasonic Sr. Partner portable that I could borrow from work on weekends. MCGA, which meant two colors, orange and black. The floppy drive would read the KQ disk but wouldn't write for saving the game, so we had to play very carefully all the way through. I remember climbing the beanstalk as being the most annoying task, because one erroneous keystroke made you fall off and we had to start the game again from the very beginning.

These days, while the graphics are much better, the games just don't seem to be as much fun.

Oh man that beanstalk and the stairs were the worst. We could save, so every couple of keystrokes, I'd save again to keep from losing the progress.
