Book: Guild Leadership

Book: Guild Leadership

You may have noticed that in Season 3, episode 5 – Application’d, Codex reads a book in her webcam called Guild Leadership: Lessons from the Virtual World. We wanted to let you know that this is not a prop, it’s an actual book by Jeon Rezvani that can help us all improve our game. This book is chock full of great insights into how online leadership translates into real world applications and vice versa and proves that MMORPGs are not a waste of time. Finally, a book that respects gamers!

So check out this book and know that all proceeds from its sale go to Oprah’s Angel Network. Jeon chose this organization because Oprah matches all administrative costs so none of your money goes to overhead. The Network also fosters leadership in young people, builds and reforms schools, helps orphans and other unfortunate people. So get this book, and feel good about being a gamer and helping the world!

It just so happens, that Jeon can walk the walk as well — one of the better WoW rogues I have played with.

LOL thats exactly what I was thinking. Anything that has to do with Oprah automatically gets ignored by me.

You’ll be awfully embarrassed when she tells you to look under you chair to receive a car.

She will make you feel awful for judging her.

Not when I look beside me and see her putting down certain religious people. She contradicts herself a lot. It’s okay for her to believe in the Universe, but not okay if someone else believes in a different path.

No, it isn’t judging, it’s observation. I don’t like Oprah either. She may do good things, but good deeds televised only get ya so far. It’s televised, after all.

I don’t hate. I do strongly dislike her attitude on some issues.

Oh GTF over yourself already, buy the book or don’t buy the book but STFU about Oprah. Who gives a rat’s arse if you like her or hate her — if the organization helps kids its dumb to not want your proceeds to help the organization because of Oprah. That’s punishing the people the organization helps because of your hatred of its leadership…self-ish much?

It might be funny to have this guy show up in an episode of the Guild say as a guide to Codex lol

The thing that struck me was on the back of the book where the author claims 1 million Chinese workers are hired to go to online games and farm gold to sell to Westerners. Boggles the mind!

Employed, as in what they do for a living, rather than hired. Most are self-employed, finding it can pay more than working for an employer.

I was just thinking how cool it would be if it was written as a kind of The Guild merchandise. I’m gonna have to get this book.

Looks like he beat me to it! I’ll definitely have to check the book out. I’ve been casually working on a similar book for a couple of years now. I actually started my blog (defeatdragons.com) to get myself moving on it a little more.

I think there are a lot of lessons that gaming can bring to “real life”, particularly in the area of managing distributed virtual teams. Gamers in guilds are volunteers, and have to be led, not pushed. That makes management lessons learned in game invaluable.

I cited this with my work managers a few times and they just kind of shrugged it off, mostly because I think they are oblivious to the fact that there is real leadership going on, and used experience from guild leadership back in the everyday, and vice versa. Agree with Atris that I had thought about writing a similar book, however other things took precidence. Glad to see it in print though, I may have to pick up a copy.

I hear Che’s Guerrilla Warfare is also a great book for both real life situations, as well as for wow. Actually, i’m only kidding…I really don’t even play WoW. BUT! I WOULD play if, in one episode, i saw one of the guild characters reading/being inspired by Che :D

It’d be preeeetty cool. It’s actually on one of my list of things i want to see before i die.
